From the Priest Associate Wednesday Night Service One of the things I am enjoying while Jim is on Sabbatical is celebrating the Wednesday evening service. I’m learning new music with Jon Marc on the piano, joyfully praising God. And I’m very glad to be sharing the ministry of healing with our congregation. I’ve always been aware that healing has been an important part of the ministry of Jesus from the beginning. Most of us know the Bible stories about Jesus healing people with leprosy, regaining sight to the blind, or asking a paralyzed person to take up his bed and walk. It’s also important to remember that Jesus called his followers to join him in the healing ministry. It’s not that any of us has the power to heal on our own, but the Holy Spirit works through us to heal. God blesses the gifts of the doctors, friends, counselors, and clergy who are called to be instruments of God’s healing grace. We must pray for those who are called to heal and give thanks for them. I want to invite parishioners, friends, and strangers to join us on Wednesday nights at 7:00 p.m. It’s an opportunity to pray with us for health in body, mind, or spirit, for yourself or for someone you know. Every Christian has a role to play in the healing ministry of Christ and we pray always for the grace and means to continue this work. Faithfully, Ruth Cathedral Light Shines Brighter Than Ever by Ernie Radaker For the last sixteen months, the Cathedral of St. Philip has been under construction. New educational space was added and almost all of the existing space renovated. The “Let Your Light Shine” building campaign has aimed to make every part of the church more open, more hospitable, more efficient and more gracious. The new entrance from the parking lot brings you inside the new building and the two-story atrium. The hallways are wider and every part of the building is accessible to all. What a thrill to see this sacred place transformed as fresh light fills the common spaces. Community and office areas have been re-arranged and have a new look. Along with the staff of the Cathedral, the Bishop and the Episcopal Center’s employees return to occupy and “re-discover” the beautiful new and renovated offices. On Sunday, October 10, the Right Reverend Neil Alexander makes a regular visitation to St. Philip’s. He will celebrate the Eucharist and make our final blessing of the new space. On Tuesday, October 19 we have planned a special day for the members and friends of St. John’s. We are offering you the opportunity to visit St. Philip’s, take a guided tour of the Cathedral, lunch in the beautifully renovated Hall of Bishop’s ($5) and spend some shopping time in the new Cathedral Bookstore. We will meet at St. John’s at 9:30 in the morning, transportation will be provided to and from Buckhead. Everyone gathers in the new atrium by 10:00 and refreshments will be served before the tour begins. Lunch, at your own expense, will be followed by some shopping time in the new beautiful bookstore before we return to College Park. There is not a charge for the tour, only for your lunch and bookstore purchases. Make a reservation by calling the church office before Tuesday, October 12. Let your light shine as we visit and give thanks for the ministry and life of our Cathedral! October Birthdays
We apologize if we have missed your birthday. If so, please call the church office and let us know. Helping our Neighbors Near and Far Hurricane Relief With the many storms that have hit Florida and caused flooding and damage to other parts of the Southeast much support is needed. Please keep those recovering from the recent storms in your hearts and prayers. You may send donations to Episcopal Relief and Development to help relieve the suffering of people in the areas devastated by hurricanes. Please send checks payable to ERD, marked for U.S. Hurricane Relief, to Episcopal Relief and Development, Box 12043, Newark, NJ 07101. Habitat for Humanity—Lunch for Volunteers On Saturday, October 30, we will provide lunch to volunteers who will be building a Habitat house in East Point. We will prepare lunch in the morning at the church for about thirty people. We will go to the site and serve the meal. If you would like to help please call the church office and let Carol know. Newcomers Celebration We have been blessed this year with a wonderful group of new faces attending St. John’s. To celebrate these folk, Al and Eleanor Dixon are generously inviting newcomers and old timers to a “dessert” party on Sunday, November 14, at 7:00 p.m. at their home. We trust that this will be a time when we get to know something about our newcomers; names, occupations, previous church experiences. And we will share with them our stories of life at St. John’s. We ask old timers to bring dessert, sweets, fruit or nuts. Newcomers are our guests. Coffee and drinks will be provided. Written invitations will be sent out with directions to those who have signed the newcomer book at the back of the church. If you plan to attend, please sign up in the Parish Hall. Diocesan Activities Softball Tournament & Fun Day The first ever Diocese of Atlanta Charity Softball Tournament and Family Fun Day will be on Saturday, October 9 at Lanford Park in Lilburn. All proceeds will be divided between Habitat for Humanity and Episcopal Relief and Development. Representatives of both will be there to talk about the work their charities do. Anybody want to play? The park is at 25 Rockbridge Road in Lilburn. There is a covered pavilion with restrooms, picnic tables, a playground and even a sandbox. Bring the whole family, even if you’re not playing ball. There will be concessions, clowns, face painting, and other activities. Openings in Cathedral Choirs The Cathedral of St. Philip has openings in its 65 -voice Cathedral Coir for all voice parts, paid and volunteer. Highlights of the coming year include the Requiems by Johannes Brahms and Gabriel Faure and the Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein—all with orchestra. The choir plans a return trip to England in the summer of 2006, when it will sing for a week in residence at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London.Schola, the cathedral’s chamber choir, is also accepting auditions in all voice parts, paid and volunteer. This group will travel to Los Angeles in February 2005, when it will sing at the national convention of the American Choral Director’s Association. The cathedral has openings in its Girls’ Choir and Boys’ Choir and invites auditions by children from grades 3 through high school graduation regardless of previous musical experience and religious affiliation. The Choristers train according to scheme of the Royal School of Church Music, which emphasizes all aspects of vocal and musical training. Choristers routinely sing services with the adult Cathedral Choir and are thereby exposed to a full range of choral music. Interested singers or their parents should call Bruce Neswick, cannon for music, at 404-365-1051, or Timothy Gunter, music coordinator, at 404-365-1050 Stewardship News In a few weeks, you will be receiving your annual commitment letter from the Stewardship Committee. This year a new, and we hope thought provoking, commitment sheet will be included. This sheet outlines the major steps along the path toward generous giving to God.Terry Parsons with the National Episcopal Center in New York designed this outline and she believes we are the first Parish willing to try it out.We hope you will find it an interesting and helpful way to determine your pledge for the coming year. Family Life Ministries Volunteers are needed for the Intake Office. If you or someone you know would like to go through training for a trial run, we would love to talk with you. This job requires compassion, the ability to listen, and the ability to handle sometimes confusing stories. The pay check for it is priceless. Ask anyone who works the desk and they will tell you. To sign up to volunteer or for more information please call Family Life Ministries at 404-761-6302 or e-mail to FLMHelps@aol.com.
