Please invite your friends and family to join you for this special evening of music. FROM JOAN SCHNEIDER’S SISTER To all of you at St. John’s: I could never put into words my feelings. You are all so very special. We were Joan’s family and we loved her dearly, and always will. You were Joan’s chosen family and she loved you all. After seeing all the love you gave her through her illness and then at the Memorial Service, I can see that the love went both ways. Thank you for your many, many acts of kindness and love. Love, Janet Brown ADOPTION FAIR One Church, One Child, an organization which facilitates adoption or foster care for needy children, will host an adoption fair on October 26 from 11:00-1:00 at the Alpha Center in East Point. If you are interested in becoming a foster or adoptive parent, call (404) 306-1750 for more information. FAMILY LIFE MINISTRIES On Sunday, October 13, the Rev. Jane Gunter, Founder of Family Life Ministries, will be our guest speaker at our Second Sunday Brunch. Family Life was founded in 1982 and now has well over one hundred regular volunteers who oversee ministry duties (including our own Ray Townsend). To volunteers, call 404/761-6302. FROM RUTH HEALY Time again for Foyers For those of you who have not shared in the Foyers experience before, I can honestly say this is one of the best, and most fun ways to get to know other parishioners at St. John's. The system works like this. If you are interested, sign up (or call the church) before October 15th. Sign up sheets will be in Bott Hall. When the sign list is complete, each couple or single will be placed in a group of 8 people, and a convener will be selected for the first evening. This person will call the people in his or her group and check on desirable times before making the first date for meeting. Usually groups meet in the evening for dinner (either potluck or planned) once a month, although I know of groups that have met for breakfast on Saturday morning. At any rate, the decision of when to meet will be made to accommodate everyone. There is no set plan for group activities at Foyers gatherings although introductions are in order, and sometimes a group will decide on a game or program. The food should be simple, and dress informal. Please join us in this adventure! FROM THE RECTOR Pastoral Care Teams For some time, I have been concerned about our ability to provide extended pastoral care to parishioners in need. We often do a wonderful job, but my concern is that we do not systematically see that everyone is attended to and that we stay with them for as long as needed. Jane Graham and Will Manders, Vestry members responsible for Pastoral Care, have devised a plan to meet this need. Volunteers will be trained and work in pairs. These teams will be assigned to a member or family in need to assess, and, if possible, meet their needs during a crisis and afterward. This could involve going shopping for a shut-in, visiting a lonely person, or coordinating food donations, a reception after a funeral, transportation to church or doctor appointments, visits by LEM II’s (who bring the Sacrament), and visits by clergy. Teams would check in with a family at crucial points within a year after a death. They would also be liaisons to the church to let us know how we can minister to a member or family. Although Ruth and I will be involved (I will ask Ruth to play a major role), this is not something the clergy can or should do alone; this is the work of the baptized. I can almost guarantee that it will be both frustrating and deeply rewarding. Please pray about whether you can serve in this way at this time. If you can, call me, Jane, or Will. How will the world know that we are Christians? By our love.
