Taize Service, August 2012

Our First Taize Service for the 2012-2013 Program Year

After nearly a year, we relaunched our Taize services. This clip is from the beginning of the service, which features a short prelude by our music director, Tom Elston. The St. John's Bell Group, which was newly formed in 2012 to explore a variety of approaches in worship for using handbells, sings and rings with the congregation.

The Queen In Westminster Abbey

Queen Elizabeth is not only the sovereign of the United Kingdom, she is also (technically) the head of the Church Of England. The video clip provided at right is of an important service dedicated to her that recently took place in Westminster Abbey. The piece of music performed as she entered the Abbey was originally written as a "coronation anthem" for Edward VII, who reigned from 1901-1910. The pageantry, occasion, and place of the service is well represented by the video, which shows how Anglicans use the fine arts as the means to adorn, amplify, and edify worship.

The Presiding Bishop's Easter Message

Unlike other branches of the Anglican Communion, where ecclesiastical authority is magesterial, that is, predicated on a royalist system of governance, the Episcopal Church in the United States has a Presiding Bishop, not an Arch-Bishop, who is elected for a term to speak on behalf of the church.

Our current Presiding Bishop, Katherine Schori, speaks about the season of Easter.

Scenes From St. Philip's Cathedral

Our diocese periodically holds important events at a central location on behalf of its approximately 100 parishes. The video at right shows excerpts from a service where several candidates were ordained as deacons in the Diocese of Atlanta.

The term "deacon" in the Episcopal tradition is similar to an internship for candidates intending to become priests (transitional deacons). During their time in the diaconate, priest candidates perform some, but not all the sacramental functions of a fully ordained priest while they undergo the final series of steps in the process leading to their full ordination.

Faces Of The Diocese Of Atlanta

This video is an informal slide show of a variety of people and places who all have one important thing in common: they are all members of the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Atlanta.
