Church Special Events Each Sunday in May
Send a Child to Camp with SkyMiles Emmaus House, a ministry in our diocese serving neighborhoods south of Turner Field, needs your Delta SkyMiles to send inner -city children to camps in New England which provide scholarships but no transportation. This is a wonderful opportunity for inner-city youth! If you can donate SkyMiles, contact Mary Kay Kohles-Baker at 404/351-4420 or baker.kohles@att.net. If you are unable to assist with SkyMiles, you can still help by sending a check to Emmaus House, 1017 Hank Aaron Dr., Atlanta, GA 30315 (marked “New England Camp Program”) Jim Pritchett is the chair of the Board of Emmaus HouseNational Day of Prayer The National Day of Prayer has been set aside by Presidential Proclamation and enactment of Congress as the first Thursday in May of each year. This year that will be May 6. The Southside Ministerial Association is planning a National Day of Prayer observance. It will take place at Jefferson Avenue Baptist Church, 1150 Jefferson Avenue, in East Point. The program will begin at 12:00 Noon in the Sanctuary. You are invited to join with others in the community as we pray for our nation, community and families on the National Day of Prayer. From the Rector RANDOM THOUGHTS First, you probably noticed that this Eagle Notes is different from any you’ve seen before. (At least, I hope you noticed!) Carol McGittigan, our new parish administrator, brings desktop publishing skills that allow us to try new things. Let us know how you like this format. I hope it will give us the opportunity to put more information in the newsletter and do it in a way that’s both interesting and easy on the eyes. And speaking of new formatting, you will see that our Sunday bulletin is entirely different as well. May 2nd, it will be an 11 x 17 piece of paper folded in the middle and containing all the liturgy, welcome, announcements, vestry members, classes, and mission statement. (Having one piece of paper saves the labor of stapling and works well.) Starting May 9th, the bulletin will come with an insert that will contain the announcements and the prayer list. This will accomplish two purposes. First, putting the announcements in the insert gives us more room in the bulletin. For a long time, I’ve wanted a bulletin that a visitor could use to get through the whole service, having to pick up a book only to sing hymns. We lose wonderful people because they find that following our service (which, after all, only requires that one juggle two books and a bulletin!) is too distracting. I hope we can make it easier. The second reason for this new form is to give you the prayer list to read, take home, and pray over. Our prayer list has become quite long, so, starting May 9th, we will say the names during the Prayers of the People only of those with immediate prayer needs. The reader will refer to those on the prayer list in the bulletin, but will not read all the names. If you have an emergency prayer request that gets to us too late to be in the insert, please let us know before the service, and we’ll add it to the list of names being read. I hope this new procedure will speed up the Prayers of the People while simultaneously allowing us the opportunity to have more meaningful prayer for those on the list. I am delighted to have Carol as our new parish administrator. But I would be remiss if I did not express my gratitude to and appreciation for Jeanne Condrey, who filled in during Beverly’s illness, agreed to stay on after Beverly died until we could find a replacement, and did a wonderful job throughout. Working with Jeanne has been a pleasure, and I thank her very much. Diana Blosser has agreed to head up another St. John’s effort to resettle a refugee family. She will be asking you to sign up for a committee on June 6 (the day the Bishop is here) at the picnic following the 10:30 service. Please be thinking of how you can help, and please thank Diana for her leadership. You might have noticed “Developing New Leadership” signs posted around the church. The vestry has been focusing on how we can teach more folks to feel comfortable doing more things at St. John’s. It’s important, because the Holy Spirit has given us lots to do! Please get involved! May God bless you as we live the Great Fifty Days of Easter. And don’t forget — wear red on Pentecost! We’re on fire!
United Thank Offering Dear St. Johns, A United Thank Offering will be held on Sunday, May 16. You are invited to ‘count your blessings’ those coins you have put in the Blue Box in thanksgiving for large and small daily gifts from God that brighten your life or the lives of those around you. The power of the Blue Box is unlimited. Your prayers and offerings have built churches and schools, made needed renovations, fed the hungry, clothed the poor, etc. In our area, your offerings have enabled a grant to be given to Bishop Allan’s Work of Our Hands, Inc., for $15,300. If you do not have a Blue Box, or would like to know more about UTO, please ask me. We need you! Yours in thanksgiving, Georgie White Coordinator, Diocese of Atlanta May Birthdays

God’s Peace, The Rector and Vestry of St. John’s Episcopal Church We thank John for his many years of service to St. John’s and Fred Daniels who will now chair the Properties Commission.
