FINANCIAL REPORT At its June meeting, the Vestry received the following financial report: at the end of May, income was $93,406, $9458 below budget. Expenses were $102,395, $1,740 below budget, meaning that we are operating at a deficit of $8,989. If you have not made a commitment to return a portion of your blessings to God, please fill out a pledge card. If you already have, thanks, and please don’t forget us over the summer! WE’VE SPRUCED UP! We’ve got new paint and carpet (the gold is gone!) in the Education Building and the stairwell. It was a much needed change and we are looking good! FUNERAL FORMS AVAILABLE It is such a gift to your family for you to plan your funeral and leave the instructions with us and them. Funeral planning forms are available by calling the church office. You will find that it is not a macabre undertaking, but is, as it should be, a celebration of life. Make that gift to your family today! FROM ANNE MERONEY Dear People of St. John’s, Thank you for the perfectly handsome communion kit that you gave to me on my last Sunday with you. I will remember you with pleasure and gratitude each time I take communion to the sick, the disabled, and others who can’t come to church. You have truly blessed me as you’ve "raised me" throughout my supervised ministry at St. John’s. The last three years are unforgettable – if only I had time and space to share all of my memories of our worship and fellowship. Many of you have given me gifts of yourselves – your confidence, trust, love, and laughter. Thank you for all of those great hugs! You have fed me, and I have grown. I feel deeply thankful for your friendship. In my three years as your seminarian, I’ve watched St. John’s grow and change. I want to share some of what I have seen. You stand in a unique place as the body of Christ as College Park begins its renaissance. There will be much to do. In Jim, you have a fine rector who cares deeply about each of you. Your vestry is thoughtful and intentional as it attends to the ministries and physical needs of the parish. As a congregation and as individuals, you are more welcoming of diversity among people than any church I know of. Newcomers are visiting St. John’s (and staying), and you are welcoming more people into the Christian community every baptismal day. You are undertaking and carrying out vital new ministries as you mirror God’s love. Most of you take seriously the charge to "love and serve the Lord" in your lives, and you will lead others to do the same. Best of all, I have seen your joy grow in awareness of the Holy Spirit’s moving through the church as we joined in song and prayer to worship Jesus Christ. Easter was a St. John’s day to remember! Years ago, a much-loved friend named Tom Champion was near death in the VA hospital, and I went over to have a last visit with him. As the time came for me to leave, I said, "Well, Tom, I guess we must say goodbye now. I sure will miss you." He reached for my hand, saying, "We never say goodbye. You know we’ll meet again in heaven. For now, let’s just say, ‘so long’." As I enter my diaconal ministry, I go out from St. John’s formed by you all. Like my old friend Tom, I won’t say goodbye to you – just "so long." With thanksgiving for our time together and love to each of you, I am Yours in Christ, Anne FROM THE RECTOR - As we say, well, okay, not "Goodbye," but "So long," to Anne, we are saying "Hello" to a new era in St. John’s life that, I believe, continues the kind of excitement and commitment of which she spoke in her kind comments. Very soon, Odyssey Counseling Center will open a satellite office (the main office is in Hapeville) in our empty space in the Education Building. I hope you will take time to learn about Odyssey (I’ve been showing a video tape). Founded in 1973 and funded by the United Way, public funds, and grants, Odyssey provides mental health services to the community on a sliding scale fee basis. In fact, 85% of Odyssey’s clients are below the federal poverty level. Victims of assault, depression, sexual abuse, domestic violence, drug and alcohol addiction, as well as survivors of suicide and others, receive help at Odyssey. We will be helping Odyssey to help. We’re also saying, "Hello" to our Supervised Visitation Ministry. Twenty-two people came to an organizational meeting, and morale was high! We’re hoping to be trained and up and running by the fall. This is a very exciting ministry, and lots of folks are very excited about it. Look for these two ministries of healing, reconciliation, and hospitality to be an important part of our identity for years to come. We will miss Anne, and we wish her the best. While she was here, she helped us to be something that we continue to grow into — being the Body of Christ, ministering to a broken world. This, my friends, is exciting!
