July 1 - 31, 2001 St. John’s Episcopal Church 404-761-8402 SPECIAL EVENTS
EACH WEEK WE OFFER
JULY BIRTHDAYS
MOST QUOTED When Americans were asked to quote from the Bible, the most common response was, "The Lord helps those who help themselves." Can you find it? ASO CONCERT IN EAST POINT The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will hold an outdoor concert on Friday, July 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the East Point Commons Area next to the library. Bring a picnic dinner and a blanket to enjoy a vibrant evening of music. Look for the St. John’s banner to sit with your friends. The rain date is July 14. For information call 404/765-1082. TRANSITIONS Transferring in:
Welcome! Transferring out: Claire and Al Willey (Nativity, Fayetteville), Mark Matson (St. Jude’s, Marietta). Our condolences to Marion Tillman on the death of her mother, Dorothy. May the souls of all the departed rest in peace.
WORSHIP AT SUNBRIDGE Through the auspices of the Southside Ministerial Association, St. John’s will lead worship (about 30 minutes) at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation Facility (a nursing home off Cleveland Ave.) on August 4th and 18th at 2:00 p.m. (We will take two Saturdays during one month a year). If you would like to be part of a team that goes with the rector on these Saturdays, please call the church. We especially need musicians, people who will pray, and people who will greet the residents. Thanks!
PENTECOST AT ST. JOHN’S Pentecost was a great day at St. John’s! We celebrated the birth of the Church with red balloons, red clothes, red flowers, and just about red everything. We worshipped and we sang and we had a grand picnic in the parking lot, after which we blessed a cross on the lawn. If you haven’t already seen it, take a look, then thank Ernie Radaker and Randall Brothers for making it possible for us to have it. Thanks to the Parish Life Team and everyone who participated in making Pentecost such a great day.
WHITNEY’S "BUMMER" The diocesan mission trip to Central America this summer has been canceled due to travel advisories for the countries the group was to visit. Upon learning of the cancellation, our own Whitney Reeves, who was excited to be selected to go on the trip, was quoted as saying, "Bummer, big bummer." However, the Diocese has scheduled a trip to Costa Rica next year, and Whitney is on the list to go. Funds collected to send Whitney this year will go toward next year’s trip. The Reeves thank everyone who contributed.
HOLY COMFORTER On July 11, we will visit our friends at Holy Comforter, a parish in East Atlanta that cares for mentally disabled adults. We meet at St. John’s at 5:15, carpool, make supper, worship at Holy Comforter, and make new friends. Call the church if you can go. If you’ve never been, try it! You’ll be with friends.
YOUTH FUN ON THE 4TH OF JULY Our youth are invited to come to a pool party at the Pritchett’s at 7:00 on July 4th (we’ll provide food and drinks). After swimming, we’ll carpool to the East Point fireworks display. Parents should pick up kids at St. John’s at 10:15. Bring swim suit and change of clothes. See you there!
HOW CAN I GET SERMONS? You have many options for getting sermons from St. John’s.
If you currently receive sermons by mail and would like to receive them by email or get them off the web site, please let us know so we can save the costs of copying and mailing. However you receive our sermons, we are delighted to be able to share them with you!
A NEW PHOTO DIRECTORY IS COMING On August 16, 17, & 18, First ChoiceResources, Inc., will be taking our pictures for a new photo directory. You’ll be hearing more about appointment times, but plan to have your picture taken. You can review them the same day; they make great Christmas presents, and we want to see your smiling face in our photo directory! Please plan to participate.
FROM THE RECTOR I recently received a call from Walter Klein informing me that he and Lucy have made the very difficult decision not to reopen Christians Academy this fall. Christians Academy has been the Klein’s dream for some time, and the realization that they are not able to continue it is, I am sure, very painful and deeply disappointing. I have admired the Kleins for their tremendous dedication during the years the school was in operation, and I would like to remind them that, although this is a sad day, they have affected the lives of young people in ways we will probably never know. I know you will join me in keeping the Kleins, the students, and their parents in our prayers as they all deal with this difficult transition. We now are faced with the possibility of a largely empty education building. I have always hated the thought of church facilities being like football stadiums—empty most of the time. For one thing, it is lonely for the church staff. Beverly and I have enjoyed having the children in the building. During the summers when they are not here, it is entirely too quiet. I certainly don’t want it to be that quiet all the time. A more important concern, however, is good stewardship. These facilities are dedicated to building the kingdom of God. It is not good stewardship to let them sit empty. For that reason I have called a number of places to put the word out that we have facilities available for ministry. I am hopeful that we can find a compatible ministry which we can help and, who knows?, might just help us in ways we can’t envision. Of course, this is all very new and is only in the exploration stages. We just want to know what options we have for using our space to serve the Lord. The Vestry will, of course, be very involved, and must approve any final decision. But I want you to know what is going on. If you have contacts or suggestions, please speak with me or a Vestry member. In the meantime, we will keep you apprised. Please pray that we may find a way to use our buildings to the glory of God.
