2002 Clothing Report

We received referrals from East Point First Baptist (2), Tri-City Depository (13), East Point First Christian Church (66), Stepping Stone Ministries (4) and St. John’s Episcopal Church (4). The Bargain Shop donated clothing worth $4354.10 (at our prices!) to 209 families. Outdated Clothing was donated to AIDS Group.

What wonderful, wonderful work the Bargain Shop does in the name of Christ! And did you know that Carol Kadidlo has volunteered since the Bargain Shop opened in 1952? Dedication like that has changed many lives. Please remember that the Bargain Shop still needs volunteers. Call ME King at 770/461-7343, if you can help out.

PRAYER VIGIL FOR PEACE

On February 19, from 6:00-7:00, we will observe a prayer vigil for peace, followed by Holy Communion and healing at 7:00. Silent prayer will be interspersed with meditations and music. If you can, please bring a candle (in a holder) that will burn for the time you are at the vigil. You may come for part or all of the vigil, but whether you come or not, please pray for peace.

Altar Flowers

If you would like to put flowers on the altar during 2003, please call the church office and let us know if it will be a memorial or thanksgiving and the date you would like to do this. The price is $30.00.

2002 FACTOIDS

In 2002, there were 8,769 Communions in the parish. We buried eight and baptized seven. Our average Sunday attendance was 126. (Don’t forget to invite your friends!)

VESTRY CHANGE

Blanche Shropshire resigned from the Vestry (effective January 1) for personal reasons. In accordance with our by-laws, in November the remaining Vestry members elected Jane Holloman to fill Blanche’s one-year unexpired term. Thanks to Blanche for her wonderful service and thanks to Jane for her willingness to serve.

FOLK SCHOOL AT MIKELL

The Work of Our Hands sponsors its third annual Folk School at Mikell Conference Center March 7-9. There will be workshops in more than a dozen disciplines, including woodworking, wood turning, landscape painting, creative writing, photography, quilting, rug hooking, stained glass making, pottery, story telling, toy making, weaving and open-hearth cooking. Artists/instructors will lead each group, but participants will also learn from one another. Dr. John Westerhoff, author of Sensing Beauty: Aesthetics, the Human Spirit and the Church, will be the keynote speaker. There will be ample time for work in your chosen field, but you will also have time to relax and enjoy the beautiful mountains and woodlands in early spring. Registration deadline is Feb. 21. Your parish office may have registration forms, or contact The Work of Our Hands at 404/504-9912 or glennas

Second Saturday Coffee House

The College Park First United Methodist Church is hosting a "Second Saturday Coffee House" for the first three months of 2003. On February 8, Glen Snell and his band will present a stirring program of Native American music. And on Saturday, March 8, a storyteller will provide entertainment. The Coffee House is held in the gym of the Youth Building located at 3726 East Main Street. Doors open at 7:30pm and the entertainment begins at 8pm. A $3.00 admission donation is suggested.

A NEW SWIMMING POOL FOR MIKELL

Please help pay for it !

Due to numerous problems with the (very) old pool, the health department required Mikell to replace the pool before it could open next summer. The Mikell Board has secured loans, and construction is underway. The cost of the new pool, which will include lots of required new features, is $380,000. The pool is not a budgeted item, so Mikell is asking for donations to help repay the loans.

Many of us love Camp Mikell and have been formed there. If you would like to help that work continue, please send donations to: Mikell Camp and Conference Center, Rt. 3 Box 3495, Toccoa, GA 30577. Thank you!

FROM THE RECTOR

A friend recently pointed out to me that some folks don’t know how to reach the clergy in an emergency. Until we can get a more permanent fix, I suggest that you cut this out and put it where you will know where it is if you need it (and I hope you won’t!):
