TRIP TO KING CENTER

The churches of the Convocation of Southwest Atlanta are planning a trip to the King Center and the "Without Sanctuary" exhibit (on lynching) on Sunday, August 11 at 2:30. We'll carpool from St. John's to the King Center. After we get back, we’ll talk about the experience, then eat pizza together. There is no cost. This trip is for youth, but adults are welcome to come as well. Please let Robbin Iddins know if you plan to attend.

WELCOME ODYSSEY

Odyssey Family Counseling Center has opened its Adolescent Program in our education building and is already helping the community by offering programs for prevention, drug counseling, family counseling, and more. We are proud to have them on our property. Please make them feel welcome, and look for an open house in September.

FROM BLANCHE SHROPSHIRE (OUTREACH CHAIRPERSON)

Many thanks to St. John’s parishioners for collecting the tabs from soda and beer cans, cat food tins, fruit cups, etc., for weeks. Jane-Ann Young delivered 55 pounds! to Ronald McDonald House recently. Our collective gift was well received by the McDonald House staff on behalf of families who are able to be near their child as he or she undergoes treatment far from home We’re on a roll - let’s keep going!

THE BISHOP IS COMING IN SEPTEMBER!

The Rt. Rev. J. Neil Alexander, Ninth Bishop of Atlanta, will make his visitation to St. John’s on September 8. Mark your calendar!

IT’S A CONTEST!

Our new Supervised Visitation Ministry will (very soon) provide facilities and trained supervisors for visits between parents and children who have been removed from the family by the courts. This will be a powerful ministry of hospitality, service, and reconciliation.

The Supervised Visitation Steering Committee (headed by Donn Blosser) asks for your help in coming up with a name and a logo for this new ministry. The name and logo will be used on letterhead and signs. The name should be catchy and convey something of what the ministry is about. The logo needs to be fairly simple so that it is easily recognizable (and not too expensive to print!), and, of course, also capture the feel of the ministry.

If you have suggestions, please get them (in written form) to the church office before August 24. The steering committee will be grateful for all ideas. The final product might be a modification of an entry, or a blending of several entries. (No pride of authorship allowed!)

Those whose ideas are used, in whole or in part, will receive a free dinner at the Brake Pad after a Wednesday night service. Such a deal!

Have fun and be creative!

TRANSITIONS

Our love and sympathy to the loved ones of Don Wyllie, Joan Schneider, and Dr. India Buirton (step-mother of John-Fletcher Breedlove) who died during the month of July. May the souls of the faithfully departed rest in God’s nearer presence.

WELCOME ALISON SCHULTZ

Alison Schultz is an "aspirant," one who is going through the Diocesan Vocational Discernment Program (she and the Diocese are discerning whether she has a call to the priesthood). As part of the program, she will be with us for 10 weeks starting in August. I asked her to write you a note about herself:

I am the wife of Todd Broadbridge and mother of Frank, 10 and Ned, 15. I was born in Akron Ohio sometime after the Truman administration and before JFK. Baptized, confirmed and married at St. Paul’s Church, Medina Ohio, where I was active throughout my young life.

After graduating from University of Akron (GO Zips!) with a degree in early childhood and elementary education, I taught for 3 years. I attended graduate school at the University of West Florida, studying one of my first loves, politics. I’ve had a variety of employment opportunities - waitress, bartender, balloon delivery, florist, teacher, campaign manager, and political consultant. The influence of motherhood, however, was stronger than my call to corporate success so combining my interest in politics and my love and understanding of learning and children, I have been a Christian educator for the last 15 years. I have been a member of St. Patrick’s since 1997. I enjoy hiking, camping and fishing with my family, reading and sewing and if time allows keeping up with current events.

In addition to serving at St. John’s for 10 weeks, I have (along with 17 others!) served at Holy Comforter and Wesley Woods. This rounds out an experience that began in January and is scheduled to be complete in early November. I am looking forward to being with you.

FROM THE RECTOR

The Rev. Ruth Healy to Join the Priest Staff at St. John’s.

I am delighted to announce that the Rev. Ruth Healy will join the staff at St. John’s. For some time (especially this year!) I have felt that the job was just too much — I was seeing things "fall between the cracks," and I’ve worried about my ability to respond pastorally while continuing to develop new programs and opportunities in the parish. The vestry agreed that I could use some help, and Ruth (who is retired, but hasn’t slowed down much) was available to work on a part time basis.

Ruth and I were ordained together. I got to know her well as we worked together on the Bishop’s Nominating Committee (combat duty!). I was delighted when she agreed to come among us. Ruth will work Sundays and two weekdays. I think you will enjoy getting to know her. Below is a letter Ruth has written to you to get the ball rolling:

Dear Friends in Christ;

Jim has asked me to write a few words about myself since I will be coming on board at St. John's as part-time Priest Associate on September 1.

In my bones I am a New Englander, brought up in New Haven, CT. I attended Smith College in MA. My first job was with the Girl Scouts, but early on I went into teaching, first in Elementary School, and later in Secondary Science. The last 16 years were in Chappaqua, NY.

My family were not church goers so my journey as a Christian happened untraditionally. Our housekeeper told me the story of Ruth when I was quite young. It made an impression because it was my name. My maternal grandparents took me to their Congregational church when I visited them. It was at their church that I was baptized when I was 12, at my request. Since then my journey has been clear.

I met the Episcopal church through a childhood friend who married a Priest. I loved it, and was confirmed in Groton, CT. in 1963. I was active in our church in Chappaqua, on the Vestry, doing nursing home ministry, etc., and the call to seminary came to me in this setting. In 1985 I closed my classroom door and entered seminary at Candler (Emory).

Deciding that life in the South was more to my liking, I went through the Vocational Testing Program in the Diocese of Atlanta and was ordained Deacon, and then Priest here.

The first 31/2 years I spent at Holy Innocents’ and then went to The Church of the Epiphany for 61/2 years. Most recently I have been the Interim Vicar in Dahlonega.

I'm excited about joining you at St. John's and look forward to getting to know you.

Faithfully,

Ruth
